Plant Traits
 

Many researchers at CINVESTAV-Irapuato are looking at manipulating plants’ inherent resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. For example, plants resistance to drought, heat, disease, and pests can be improved by increasing the plant’s production of certain metabolites or changing the plant’s cellular wall structure. Plant traits associated with plant growth can also be manipulated.  For example, it may be desirable to increase the leaf spread of a plant, or the root growth.
    
Dr. John Paul Délano Frier – Dr. Delano’s research in this area has focused on improving drought resistance of amaranth. (Link to information sheet)

Dr. Alejandro Blanco Labra- Dr. Blanco’s research has identified compounds making certain plants more resistant to pests. For example, he has discovered chemicals in tepary beans that make these beans particularly resistant to insect and microbial attacks. (Link to information sheet)

Dra. Nayelli Marsch Martinez- Dra. Marsch’s research in this area has focused on improving resistance in the common bean and tomato. Dra. Marsch also looks at cytokines and plant hormones that affect fruit opening. (Link to information sheet)

Dr. Raúl Alvarez Venegas – Dr. Alvarez researches long-term plant defense priming by seed and plant treatments. He has identified priming agents that protect crops from pathogens and thus methods for improved plant disease resistance. (Link to information sheet)
